Republic of Congo Field Journal May 1–13, 2025
In early May, Arctic Tern Expeditions welcomed its first group of guests to the Republic of Congo, a journey two years in the making. This new adventure, thoughtfully designed by Guillaume, offered a completely different kind of experience: no zodiacs, no ice. Just a deep, authentic immersion into Congolese culture and nature.
From Pointe-Noire to Brazzaville, the expedition led us through vibrant villages in the Mayombe forest, along the Congo River, and into the bush. What left the strongest impression wasn’t just the stunning landscapes, but the heartfelt connections formed between our guests and local communities. Congolese hosts enthusiastically welcomed us into their lives and took us fishing, hiking, and harvesting; teaching them how to prepare cassava, fish, manioc, and chicken over open fires; and even showing them how to carve wooden masks with local artisans in Pointe-Noire.
Nature was equally unforgettable. The Republic of Congo’s ecological diversity is astounding. From the Atlantic coastline in the south to the lush equatorial forests in the north. We explored it all, and still, our guests couldn’t get enough.
As part of our commitment to conservation, ATE supports two impactful wildlife initiatives in the region. Our journey included visits to the Jane Goodall Institute to observe rescued chimpanzees, and to Odzala-Kokoua National Park, where we tracked lowland gorillas through the dense rainforest. Each encounter offered unique insights into conservation in action. Guests were amazed by the energetic sounds of chimpanzees, contrasted with the quiet, grounded presence of a gorilla family. A misty early-morning trek through the equatorial forest in search of wild gorillas was a highlight - both humbling and magical.
Every aspect of the trip, from the food and lodging to the warmth of our hosts, was praised for its authenticity and charm. This was more than a trip. It was a transformative journey, rich with learning, cultural exchange, and natural wonder.
We can’t wait to return in 2026 and share this life-changing experience with a new group of adventurers.
