WILDLIFE
-
Southern white rhinos have been protected in the Ziwa Reserve in Central Uganda since 2005. This is the only location in the country to see white rhinos. Ziwa is notable for its walking tours to see eye-to-eye with these gentle giants.
Conservation efforts here have been incredibly successful in protecting vulnerable individuals from poaching and habitat loss. The breeding program at Ziwa has been a revelation - with new baby rhinos being born into the reserve regularly. Initially, 6 southern white rhinos were introduced to the ranch. At the start of 2023, the total has risen to 42 rhinos, and we are expecting that number to grow.
Ziwa’s mission is to reintroduce these majestic creatures back into the wild in a collaborative effort between the Uganda Wildlife Authority (the custodians of the species) and Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranch Limited. Together, they will introduce rhinos into other national parks throughout Uganda, roaming the land with other wildlife species.
Our group will obtain specialized permits for this experience - allowing us to start the morning walk one hour earlier than normal, optimizing conditions for photography. Two rhino treks included.
-
A life-changing wildlife encounter with our closest relatives. Both chimpanzees and gorillas are highly reliable (99% chances of seeing). Two chimpanzee treks and one gorilla trek are included.
-
There will be an optional visit to Pangolin Rescue Centre located outside of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest NP. This center locally rescues endangered Tree pangolins from poachers who sell pangolins on the wildlife black market or use them for bushmeat. The Pangolin Rescue Centre instead rehabilitates and releases Tree pangolins safely back into the wild.
Additionally, the centre focuses on creating new and sustainable means of income for pangolin poachers as well as educating schoolchildren about pangolins and the importance of their rainforest ecosystem.
The Pangolin Rescue Centre is an optional excursion that can be undertaken on this trip and they ask for a 25 USD donation to be paid in cash for each visitor.
This is a chance to see this reclusive and endangered species up close. Please note that while it is often possible to see pangolins at the centre, it is never a guarantee that they will have one on site.
-
The morning of the gorilla trek, you will be transferred to the national park offices where you will be allocated a gorilla family in trekking groups of eight as well as a gorilla tracking guide. After a pre-tracking briefing by your guide touching on the gorillas generally, your assigned gorilla family as well as appropriate safety precautions, you drive to the trailhead for the start of a thrilling adventure. Expect to walk between 2 and 8 hours in steep and sometimes muddy conditions with rain overhead, which can be tough and require a degree of (average) fitness. However, the thrill of coming face to face with a Mountain gorilla silverback completely makes up for the effort!
-
This prehistoric bird only resides in a few spots across Africa. Chances of spotting are 90% (highly reliable). Three dedicated visits to the site are included to guarantee sightings and enough time to photograph. Exclusive insight to this species’ life and ecology will be provided through in-the-field naturalist interpretation from a local scientist specializing in Shoebills.
